Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art. – Frederic Chopin

A little about me…My family and I live in Grand Island, FL. My husband and I have been involved in church ministry for as long as we have been married – 22 years now. My husband is currently the associate pastor at Grand Island Baptist Church right around the corner. We have four beautiful children, ranging from age eight to 19.  From transporting kids to school, jujitsu, and band practices we keep pretty busy. When life gives me the chance to rest, I enjoy nature photography.

My piano education began when I was eight years old. I was the first of four siblings to begin lessons. It didn’t take long to realize my love of the instrument. As I grew older, learning to play the piano was not just a hobby but a part of me. Through middle and high school I would participate in festivals and competitions, eventually earning scholarships for college. Starting early I had the chance to accompany for my church choir, be a part of the youth praise team, and even accompanied for a friend’s solo/ensemble at school.

I began my formal studies at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, MS. I was a Piano Performance Major having opportunities to accompany for other students and giving recitals each year. Life moved me to Florida where I continued my education at The Baptist College of Florida in Graceville. I graduated with a BM in Church Music along with most of the coursework of the Music Education degree. During that time, I regularly accompanied other students, both instrumental and vocal. I also had the opportunity to play in the concert band and jazz band at the college.

Over the years I have played for weddings and provided background music for many different events. I’ve had the joy of being the pianist at previous churches and I currently play the keyboard for our praise band. My experience in the church and different bands has served to broaden my horizons in being able to play various musical styles.

Teaching has been a part of my life for over 25 years. My very first student was my youngest brother before I left for college. I found it very fulfilling to teach him something that I loved. That sparked a love for what I do now, teaching others the joy of music through the piano. Over the years I have taught dozens of students ranging from age four to senior adults. Each student bringing their own personality to the table, their own goals and dreams, and their own challenges. Everyone learns at a different pace. Some struggle while others race to the finish line. With each student I have learned to accommodate their particular needs and always strive to keep the lessons fun. I set weekly goals for my students and encourage them all to practice at the best of their ability knowing this is the key to success.

Why do I love teaching? Music is a chance to tell a story when you are unable to find the words. Music expresses something deep within. I use the piano to tell a story. Sometimes that story changes, so the music I play changes. The music I listen to changes. When our moods change, music has the ability to follow us when others cannot. For this reason I play. For this reason I teach.
